Canon A1100 Powershot Review

Canon A1100 Powershot Saved My Vacation

Check Out This Information Before You Buy the Canon A1100 IS Powershot
The A1100 IS Powershot is a 12Mp compact camera with 4x optical zoom, available in different colours. I bought one during a recent vacation following an accident with my previous camera so had to get to know it quickly.

It is not for the serious photographer, as there is little in the way of manual controls, but that is not its market. It does have many useful features and I was quickly able to take some great pictures.

One thing that attracted me to this camera is that, rather unusually, it uses regular batteries (alkaline or rechargeable). The only disadvantage I have found about digital photography is being in a situation where you want to take some pictures and the battery goes flat. At least with this model you can easily buy new batteries anywhere.

So how did I find the A1100?

I was largely impressed by it and give the reasons below. I am not going to try and write a detailed review just the points that struck me.

Picture Quality - I can certainly give the Canon A1100 Powershot a favorable review for the quality of the pictures. They are clear and sharp with good color reproduction.  It works well in all light conditions but pictures taken in bright daylight are particularly good.  I enlarged some shots to 8 x 10 without any obvious reduction in sharpness.

Ease of Use - The camera is not the smallest on the market but it feels good in use. It starts up quickly and requires little time between shots. There is an optical viewfinder which is nowhere near as good as the LCD screen for composing a picture but it does come in handy in bright sunlight when seeing the LCD can be tricky. In fact the LCD can be turned off to save the batteries. Operation of the camera is fairly easy although many buttons have two functions and the manual could be more helpful in explaining how to use them. Battery life (from the two AA batteries) was surprising good and changing them was easy.

Features - There are fourteen pre-configured settings (scene modes) enabling you to quickly setup for particular conditions or type of shot. It has Image Stabilisation and Face Detection (found this useful) but if you just want to keep it simple you can let the camera work automatically.

The A1100 can also record video at up to 640x400 at 30fps.

So all in all the Canon A1100 Powershot gets a favorable review from me. If you just want to take great pictures with a minimum of fuss it could be for you.
